GUEST COMMENTARY
DAR Corner – Old Concord Chapter
By Alice Galinat
President Dwight Eisenhower designated the time from 9/17 to 9/23 annually as Constitution Week to commemorate and celebrate the signing of the US Constitution that took place on September 17, 1787.
President Eisenhower’s proclamation came after the passage of a joint resolution on August 2, 1956 by both Houses of Congress to set this time aside for contemplation and commemoration for the acts resulting in our constitution. President Eisenhower encouraged “appropriate ceremonies and activities in schools, churches, and in other suitable places”
In the past the D.A.R. OLD CONCORD CHAPTER has provided libraries in the towns of Acton, Boxborough, Carlisle, Concord, Littleton, Maynard, and Stow with bookmarks printed with the Preamble to the Constitution for patrons (especially children) to take.
In Concord’s Main Library the Chapter setup an exhibit near the children’s area and the circulation desk on the Constitution containing a print of Howard Chandler Christy’s painting, “The Signing of the Constitution” and the 39 delegates that signed their name and state.
Due to the pandemic, in place of providing bookmarks with the Preamble to the Constitution and an exhibit in Concord’s Main Library, the Old Concord Chapter is providing a Fill in the Blank ...PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION puzzle for children and encourages you to reflect on and remember our freedoms the constitution and amendments have given us.
